Bob: Hi, I’m Bob Clark.
Donna: And I’m Donna Botti. We’re with Delos Inc and we make the web work for you. In today’s Tech News Tuesday episode, we’re talking about the 20% text rule for Facebook ads. Facebook ads that had more than 20% text on the ad images were not approved.
Bob: That’s right Donna. They even had a tool to check it if your ad aligns with the restriction. The Text Overlay Tool is now gone. But why was it put in place?
Donna: Well basically Facebook and Instagram felt that users dislike ads with too much text in the main image, so they restricted it to seemingly improve the general user experience.
Bob: This new update removes any reach restriction for this, meaning that ads with more than 20% text in the images will be displayed as normal, and will reach the same amount of people as any other Facebook ad.
Donna: This is good news for advertisers since the rule sometimes meant you had to rework the creative for an ad a few times in order to pass the tool. The official explanation from Facebook still maintains that ad images with less than 20% text perform better and recommends that advertisers quote, “keep your text short, clear and concise in order to get your message across effectively.” This is good advice, but now you have some leeway in that 21% text that will now pass the ad.
